its inspired by my travels, working with homeless youth and living in QLD (which i used to)...

Well, well, well..   I just got a BigPond account and i thought 'Why Not Start A Profile'??? i often think in inverted commas which can be quite helpful sometimes. Anyhoo..

allow me to introduce myself - my real name is Gary, although i perform (as a rapper) under the name Dragonfly (which i made up when i was trekking in thailand in 1999).

Im not sure what preconceptions people might have about rappers so i thought id set the record straight, particularly about the underground Hip-Hop scene here in Australia..  Basically i dont rap about guns, 'bitches' or any of the other ridiculous stuff you might associate with commercial american rappers like 50cent or whoever. The underground scene in Australia is quite strong, and draws from the original ideas of Hip-Hop culture which is based on rap, breakdancing, djing and graffiti. 

I personally write songs about my experiences and thoughts (which can be quite rambling) as well as abstract ideas or jokes or anything else that seems to make sense at the time. I dont rap in a fake american accent and nor do any of the artists i associate with - this is usually done by corny kids who dont know much about the culture or have their own identity (like those guys you always see at the australian idol try outs).

As well as writing songs and performing live with a DJ, i also freestyle a lot (freestyling is the art of making up raps as you go along without any plannning) and have won quite a few competitions across australia. I enter a lot of battles (yes kinda like 8 mile) and am involved in a competition at the moment called the World Rap Championships (WRC) which i will post footage of and links as soon as i figure out how to do that.

I have worked as a youth worker, and still spend a fair bit of time doing community oriented music workshops with kids from disadvantaged background, refugees and the homeless etc. As well as that i earn money by working part time jobs, selling cds and writing bios and press releases for other artists.
